“Why don’t you tone it down?”

People cannot be brutalized, then blamed when they are skeptical of peace initiatives and gestures that are engineered to only further their oppression. When “talking” is really about silencing, it is dangerously counterproductive. The quest for peace should entail undoing the damages of the transgressions that invoked a need for contention and a subsequent call for unity in the first place. Boycotts and non-violent resistance movements exist to level the playing field so that talks can actually be substantial.
