Faux News

There had been a spate of threats made across America against Jewish houses of worship and civic centers. Today, the FBI arrested a 19 year old Israeli-American who was behind these threats. Apparently, he did it in order to draw attention to and increase sympathy with the Jewish community in light of the rising anti-Semitic trends in this country.

I have noticed a few posts ‘gloating’ about this false hoax perpetrated by someone who is clearly mentally disturbed.

Muslims! Realize that such an attitude is wrong. It is simply un-Islamic, and frankly unbecoming of any decent person. We are better than that.

We too have had our share of mentally disturbed youngsters fabricating incidents of alleged Islamophobic attacks. When that happens, we groan and are irritated that someone from our own ranks would do such a thing. We all realize it makes matters worse for us.

Why can we not extend the same sympathy to other communities? Why can we not understand that there is indeed a rising trend of anti-Semitism, and that most anti-Semites are also (not surprisingly!) Islamophobic?

No place of worship should be threatened. No religious community should be fearful of practicing its faith. And given the rising climate of Far Right hatred and xenophobia in America and Europe, we Muslims had better learn that we will need all the help that we can get in this long-term battle.

Rather than gloat, sympathize.

Conspiracy theories are all lies, except for the ones that are true.

As a rule, I don’t peddle in conspiracy theories, because frankly many of them truly are outrageous, and the ones that aren’t are difficult to prove or disprove. Until, that is, solid evidence emerges.

For the last decade and a half, we had all heard rumors that many al-Qaeda videos were faked and used as propaganda by America to further justify its aggressive wars and military spending. Now, we have definitive proof.

Read the article carefully. What is surprising isn’t the fact that over $ 500,000,000 of tax-payers’ money was used to produce such videos, but that:

1) this news item is barely registering in mainstream media, and is only being reported and highlighted by independent media outlets.

2) not too many people seem perturbed by this news (thats HALF A BILLION DOLLARS – imagine how much that money would have benefited American citizens if it were spent on, say, education!)

3) and the big question of them all: if al-Qaeda videos were faked and produced for propaganda purposes, what else was faked? How can we sift fact from fiction anymore? In fact how do we not know that similar videos or other propaganda items aren’t still being used to further support current wars and invasions?

Truly, many disturbing questions and legitimate doubts are raised. Alas, there is not much we can do because anyone who constantly mentions conspiracy theories discredits himself and is viewed as a fringe lunatic. (And I myself, for the record, also dismiss many such conspiracies, but still, questions remain about some of them).

Fake News and False Flags

How the Pentagon paid a British PR firm $500M for Iraq propaganda

It is the blessed month of Ramadan, and I’m trying my best to keep posts of a spiritual nature, and minimize current events/politics. Nonetheless, sometimes you really have to comment!

We’ve all been seeing the tragedy in Charleston and the mass murder of 9 innocent people in a historic church unfold over the last few days. Once again, we are reminded of the reality of bigotry and racism in America, and the great divide between a dominant majority and a persecuted and marginalized minority. We’ve all not been surprised when the word ‘terrorism’ was barely used to describe this act; we expected and saw Faux News try to paint this act as being something other than it really was; we were not at all shocked when this shooter, who had murdered 9 people in cold blood, was calmly and civilly arrested, even as the last few months have shown how African Americans who are not guilty of ANY crimes are manhandled, choked or even shot in the back by the police for the most trivial of crimes, or for no crime at all. This blatant demonstration of double standards did not even bat an eyelid in most of us.

But this last video that I have just seen is the last straw. The judge in the case, James Gosnell Jr., clearly demonstrates the bigotry and blindness – the blatant double-standards – that exist in so many segments of this country.

While setting bail for this murderer (I wonder if a Muslim or Af-American had killed even 1/3rd of this number would bail ever have been set?), he proclaimed that we should sympathize with the OTHER victims of this crime: the family members of the murderer.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nkS7k1iaAH8

Seriously?

I wonder if any judge had claimed that perhaps we should sympathize with the family members of the people still sitting unjustly in Guantanamo, or the family members of the Tsarnayev brothers, or the family members of Aafia Siddiqui, or the family members of thousands of other people who have been, justly or unjustly, harmed, killed or jailed by the system – I wonder if any judge had wanted us to sympathize with the ‘brown’ or ‘black’ criminals (or innocents who have been made into criminals), how well that would be received in the mainstream public.

This judge clearly identifies more with the perpetrator of this mass-murder than he does with the victims who have been killed. It is this blind bigotry and racism that is so scary: people don’t even realize that they have dehumanized ‘the other’ (whether they be blacks, or Muslims, or Hispanics), and that any criminal of their own background is treated as and considered a full human being, no matter how heinous the crime.

And THAT, folks, is what you call White Privilege.

In another blatant example of how:

1) Non-Muslims who commit or intend to commit acts of wanton killing are not given the same (or even a fraction) of the media attention that Muslims receive,

2) Charges of 'terrorism' are rarely used against such individuals,

3) Right-wing nut-jobs who incite fear and hatred, and spread unfounded rumors and at times blatant lies (like Sean Hannity in this particular case), continue to go completely unchallenged and blatantly spread mass hysteria and bigotry…

Robert Doggart, an American Christian Minister, along with his band of armed zealots, were on the verge of massacring an entire Muslim school and attacking and killing everyone in its attached mosque. He had amassed an arsenal of weapons and explosives, ready to undertake this deed.

Doggart is a Christian Minister, and he also ran for Congress in my own home state of Tennessee, and finished in third place in Tennessee’s Fourth Congressional District last year, behind the victorious incumbent, Republican Scott DesJarlais, and the Democratic challenger, according to The Tennessean newspaper, receiving 6 percent of the vote.

So if someone wanted to employ the types of tactics that Faux News is guilty of, one could claim that not only does Doggart represent his faith, he also represents his country (and of course that would be an erroneous claim…).

Alhamdulillah, Doggart's nefarious scheme was thwarted before it was too late. Yet, this news story has barely attracted any mainstream attention, and is only being circulated (as is typical) predominantly by Muslims on social media.

Also not surprising, he is not, as of yet, being charged with 'terrorism' related offenses.

Failed congressional candidate pleads guilty in plot to massacre Muslims: ‘We will be cruel to them’
www.rawstory.com
A former congressional candidate admitted to plotting the annihilation of a Muslim village identified by Sean Hannity and other conservatives as a terrorist training camp.

The way various pundits and news agencies are reporting the #BaltimoreRiots is similar to the way those same pundits and news agencies report on Muslims.

You can follow the path of Faux News and Co., and ignore the million and one problems and legitimate grievances that exist, and concentrate on the looting and vandalism, all the while preaching from your high horse about 'our' great values and 'their' terrible ways, even as your choice of words, images, and tone continue to scream your own racist and xenophobic tendencies …

Or you can be more nuanced, and realize that the vast majority of protestors have nothing to do with the looting and rioting, and that there are some valid causes for anger, stemming from many decades of systematic police brutality, endemic racism, unchecked abuse of black civilians by white cops…and the list goes on and on. And when you look at the reality, you realize that mainstream America is in fact tacitly supporting the status quo by NOT caring about the grievances of those who are most affected by it.

The same goes for 'Islamic terrorism' as well. What goes around comes around, and decades of repression, drones, bombings, regime change, invasions, torture, and other tactics will inevitably result in 'blowback'. You can either ignore the entire context and label all of 'them' as barbarians, or you can take a step back and ask 'What have we done to make so many people so angry at us?'

The answer requires a lot of courage, and not that much research.
