Salman Al-Farsi is one of those legendary Sahabas about whom we have very little information about because he grew up in Iran. Therefore we have no information about him from any source other than what he himself told of his own life later on, and what he narrated to the Sahaba.

One thing that really makes Salman intriguing is the very ironic and profound change that happened, that he grew up in the pinnacle of Persian power, seeing the glory of what is called the ‘Sassanid Empire’. He was a citizen and a member of this empire at a time when no one could ever have predicted that the empire would be destroyed and wiped out. Not only did he live to see that his own Persian Empire eradicated, but he was also part of the army that fought against it. They even destroyed the Sassanids and then appointed Salman as the Governor of the capital of the Persian Empire.

Someone sent me this question:
لماذا ذكر الله جزء من الأنبياء ولم يذكرهم كلهم في القرآن؟
ماهي الحكمة من ذلك؟
Why did Allah only mention some prophets and not all of them in the Quran. What’s the wisdom in doing so?

Allah knows best but I personally think the answer is quite simple. The Quran is not a book of history. Take a step back and observe that even the handful of prophets that are mentioned have been spoken about in brief without exhaustive biographies. The surahs of the Quran have the purpose of offering us lasting guidance, counsel, reminder and wisdom. Everything mentioned serves that purpose and everything omitted is because it doesn’t serve that purpose. Surah 26 is a great example to think about. Prophet after prophet is mentioned that belongs to different regions and generations, separated by miles and centuries and yet echo the same message. فاتقوا الله وأطيعون. This drives home the point that the essential divine message has remained consistent throughout societies, cultures and generations from the tongues of all the inspired prophets. They didn’t know one another and in many cases didn’t even share the same language yet their message was the same. Allah Himself tells us that He deliberately didn’t mention all prophets. That is by divine design:

Holy Quran 4:164

Oh man if I could geek out and tell you about the مشغول عنه in this ayah I’d be telling you about the منصوب beginning then reiterated in the ضمير متصل which emphasizes the مفعول به twice, thus communicating not just that “there are messengers We have narrated about to you already (oh prophet s) but actually that these were incredible, remarkable, noteworthy, attention deserving messengers! The grammatical style of the ayah is very loud and clear that the messengers that have been mentioned and more importantly what has been mentioned about them is of colossal importance. The ayah then goes on to finish the point about amazing prophets who are no less valuable who have not been mentioned. The same grammatical form المشغول عنه is used for them. This is Allah’s way of telling us that just because they’re not mentioned in the Quran doesn’t mean they’re not valuable. And of course my favorite part of this whole ayah is its conclusion that Allah engaged Musa (as) in great conversation! Quranic Hint, make a big deal out of the study of the narrative of Musa (as) in the Quran!

Bottom line: خذ ما طف لك. Old Arab saying that means focus on what you have before you. Too often we’re interested not in what Allah did say but rather what He didn’t say. What was the ministers wife’s name in the story of Yousuf. What color dog was the dog in the story of the cave? Is ZulQarnain Persian? If Allah wanted your attention on that stuff, He’d tell you. How about we focus on what He did say because I guarantee its wisdom and value has not been exhausted.

Ok bye.

According to several studies, the US population as a whole is becoming less and less religious. So where do American Muslims fit in? What motivates their religious doubt?

We sampled over 600 Muslims across America and recorded their opinions on a number of social, political, and religious issues.

Dear Muslim community, please pay attention as this is important:

I routinely have posted about fake FB accounts using my name, and other public figures, to scam people. But this is far more nefarious. With the Mueller report naming specific “Islamic” and “Muslim” organizations that were really Russian bots organizing Islamophobic protests here in Texas and elsewhere, we really need to pay attention to this.

Pay attention to the fake accounts peddling discord in the community all the time. Using Muslim names and pages, these accounts have infiltrated the Muslim twittersphere and the comments sections of Muslim facebook public figures and organizations. People hiding behind fake accounts or pages can’t be taken seriously on anything and should actively be banned and ignored.

I’m asking you to pay closer attention to this, share widely, and remind others when bots and trolls start peddling stuff in or against the community.

So you guys have asked some heavy questions tonight. I don’t know if I have all the answers. But I think that these are worth the conversation.

Thanks to the wonderful audience in the Hague for an insightful evening. Learned a lot from you all and I’m taking stock of your questions and comments many of which have been nothing short of eye-opening. I’ll go on fb live around 12 AM tonight (UK time 11 pm, 6pm EST), to talk about some of your questions for a few minutes. And if any of you have anything to ask, just send your questions in via the comments section below. I hope to catch you then.

Civil rights campaigners from across the globe are all in agreement. Israel & all oppressive regimes must stop imprisoning & killing our children. Free them all. Stop the killing. And. Remember that if you can still speak from where-ever you live, raise your voice by sharing this video before the oppressor comes for you!

Tariq Ramadan is someone whom I have had the opportunity to benefit from, meet with many times, and consider as a friend.

While I am greatly saddened by the allegations that have been made against him, and I sincerely pray that those allegations are completely false (and of late there have been many disturbing inconsistencies in those allegations, and blatant disregard for police protocol that needs to be answered), the purpose of this post has absolutely nothing to do with those allegations, and everything to do with the clear hatred and bigotry that the French authorities, politicians, justice system and media are treating him with.

Regardless of whether those allegations are true or not (and I pray that the truth comes to light and that justice is served), here are the issues that I and many others see as clear violations of protocol:

– he was arrested by the police after he VOLUNTARILY went to the police station for questioning. Typically arrests are not done in similar cases.

– he has been held in SOLITARY CONFINEMENT, in a MAXIMUM SECURITY lockdown, when that is never done for such cases. He does not present a threat to anyone else, and certainly doesn’t warrant such harsh measures as a prisoner.

– he has been DENIED FAMILY VISITATION RIGHTS, and his wife and children have still not seen him after more than two weeks. Again, this is simply unheard of in any other similar situation.

– two days ago, a French judge DENIED him medical release from prison despite the fact that it was deemed medically unsuitable as the prison could not cater to his deteriorating medical situation.

– yesterday, his medical condition (he suffers from multiple sclerosis) became so severe that he needed to be taken to the hospital, where, again, he was denied even basic visitation rights. Still, the judge refused to release him on humanitarian grounds.

It is truly sad that some of our brothers and sisters, in their having been caught up with so many scandals and harassment claims around the world (many or most of which are true) are blinded by their hurt and anger to not see these double standards for which so many of us are complaining.

Once again, THIS IS NOT ABOUT WHETHER DR RAMADAN IS GUILTY OR NOT. (Still, I know in the comments below so many people will bring in that issue). This is about the clear animosity that is being shown to him by the entire French judicial system, and the inhumane treatment that is being meted out to him, merely because of who he is and what he represents. If he is guilty, he should be treated like any other French person charged with the same types of insinuations, not the current way that he is being treated.

Here are the action items for those who want to do something:
1. Please SIGN the online petition,
https://www.change.org/p/lib%C3%A9reztariq-ramadan-free-tariq-ramadan

2. Tweet at various politicians and the French Embassies and Consuls with the hashtag #FreeTariqRamadan

3. Raise awareness of these issues on your social media.

4. Write a note to his family that he, and they, are in your duas. https://www.freetariqramadan.com/contact

May Allah help all those who are unjustly targeted and protect them and their families!

Asalamu alaikum.

The crowd is gathering here in The Hague.
I’m excited to be able to share the Story of Musa AS with you all. I hope we can all mutually benefit.
