Did you know that the father of Amr Ibn Al ‘As, Al ’As Ibn Wa’il was one of the worst enemies of Islam? He was a chieftain for one of the sub-tribes of the Quraysh. In fact, a number of verses were revealed in the Qur’an because of him. Of them is Surah Al-Kauthar, which was revealed because he ridiculed the Prophet(S).

Our leaders can be an external manifestation of what *we* are inside. Sometimes a nation has a racist president because there is deep, hidden racism in the hearts of many people.

And sometimes we are ruled by pharonic tyrants because we have yet to tame the Pharoah within. We may not be Pharaohs to a nation, but are we pharaohs in our homes, our workplaces, our mosques?

Remember God says, “Indeed Allah does not change the condition of a people until they change what is inside themselves.” (Quran 13:11)

This broke me. Our immigration system is broken. It was before Trump, and now even worse.

The long fight to keep the Garcia family together ended early this morning at Detroit Metro Airport. Jorge kissed his wife and children goodbye before boarding a plane to Mexico. Although he was brought to Michigan when he was just 10, Jorge was 2 years too old to take advantage of the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program that protects many other undocumented immigrants in his position. Rather than wait to see what reforms are made, Immigration officials came into work on a national holiday to take Jorge away from his family.

Cindy, his wife, has sworn to keep fighting to reunite the family as soon as possible.

I know I’d be nothing without the love and support of my mother (may Allah have mercy on her) and my wife (may Allah preserve her).

I’ve been running around for the last 4 days to no less than 10 MLK events and city functions, and I haven’t once heard a mention of his wife. This isn’t to criticize the phenomenal speakers at all of these events, but to remind everyone of these important women. This image below is one of my favorite. Having been blessed to interact with the daughters of El Hajj Malik El Shabazz Malcolm X, I have heard as much about Dr. Betty as I have about Malcolm (may Allah have mercy on them both).

“As you honor my father today, please remember and honor my mother, as well. She was the architect of the King Legacy and founder of @TheKingCenter, which she founded two months after Daddy died. Without #CorettaScottKing, there would be no #MLKDay.” – @Bernice King (Be A King

It has been a long time since I’ve taught this course on Salman the Persian, and there is no better place to teach it again than in Boston!

Looking forward to seeing you all on Friday inshaAllah. Register at https://www.almaghrib.org/boston Would you seek the truth……despite the cost?

Imprisoned by his father, betrayed by scholarly authority and enslaved in a strange land: All obstacles on the arduous Journey of Salman the Persian.

This is the story of one man’s struggle to find the truth.

Relive the journey as Salman journeys from Persia to Syria to Arabia…as a Zoroastrian priest, a dedicated Christian, and finally a Companion of the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ.

The Unique Vantage Point in a World Awaiting Muhammad ﷺ

Islam came to the Arabs, whereas Salman traversed from outside the Arab world searching high and low. He brought with him insight and experience strange to the Arabs of the time:

-Intimate view of the Persian and Roman empires of the time
-Time spent in Persia as a Zoroastrian Fire Keeper
-Experience with the dying strands of early Christianity
-Study in Nestorian churches of each town he visited
-Entering Madinah recognizing it as the prophesied city of the Prophet
-Powerful moment of meeting the Prophet ﷺ for the very first time

Overcome Your Own Struggles With Seeking the Truth. Every path to truth is met with obstacles. Most experience just one or two, whereas Salman encountered them all.

-Non-practicing and/or adversarial parents
-Corrupted teachers and scholarly leadership
-Lack of resources
-Face of doubt and insecurities
-Alienation and isolation upon accepting the truth
-Classical sources in foreign languages

How the Prophet ﷺ Treated Salman

Not only are there lessons for every truth seeker…

…learn how the Prophet ﷺ cared, integrated, welcomed and learned from Salman the Persian.

These are lessons for anyone with:
-an inquisitive mind
-a friend asking critical questions about Islam
-a family member coming back to religion
-a convert community trying to transition
-anyone struggling with the truth

The Prophet ﷺ placed his hand upon Salman’s and said,
“By the One in whose Hand is my soul! If faith were on Pleiades (the stars) then men among these people would reach it.” [Tirmidhi]

This IlmNight, transform your relationship with your own personal path to the truth.

Dr. King to me represents a movement, not a man. A movement that insists on justice even when attempts are made to pacify it in the name of peace. A movement that moves beyond the flowery language of a colorblind society, and forces a necessary tension that we may deal with the intertwined issues of racism, poverty, and militarism. If we are truly to celebrate the life of Dr. King, we must continue his protest beyond the parade. For the issues he sought to address are alive and well, but so is his inspiration. – Omar Suleiman

I salute the people of the scar.
See, a scar is a wound that didn’t kill you.
I salute you. Every single one of you.
You are all my people.
I know you’ve lived.
And I know life has hurt you.
I know it has pushed you down.
I know this. Trust me I do.
I know you’ve been on your knees.
And maybe you still are.
But I also know you will not stay there.
I know you are a warrior.
Remember that the land that is burnt, makes way for new life.
And the bone that is broken, heals stronger. Every time.
That is the way of life.
We fall to learn what it means to stand.
We crawl to understand the power of running.
We break, to be built.
Sometimes we lose, to make room for what’s meant. And what is better. So much better.
And so I salute you, my people.
You, and I, are the people of the scar.
