From Iraq to Yemen …

The regional destabilization process began in 2000, and more clearly with the announcement by G. W. Bush of "the Middle East's democratization" and the "liberation" of Iraq. Since then, the Iraqi model is the rule: fragile political systems, divisions between clans and religious affiliations within the respective countries, while securing the access to resources (oil, gaz, etc.) and redeploying of regional security and arms policies.

Yemen – where the al-Qaeda networks settled appropriately after Afghanistan – offered the United States, Europe and Israel, a historical opportunity to reposition themselves through the general process of destabilization of the Middle-East. Iran, which is central, becomes the enemy within … and the useful parameter of polarization and division. The "Sunni" forces must "unite" and protect themselves… Within this chaos, we must ask the question of "who loses ?" … All the Arab-Persian peoples of the region. All of them. Economically, for some years to go, China, India, Russia and the new non-Western economic actors will see their growth slow drastically in the region.

We must stop being naive … US policy, the European follow-it-all and the Israeli positioning are cynical and horrifying. But not as much as the hypocrisy, cowardice and negligence of the Arab leaders in the region. It is them who betray their people, forget all the human principles and who are the shame of our time.

The status of the Companions is very high – this is a theological point that all Sunni Muslims agree to. And their faith (iman) is the best of all of the creation, after the prophets. It is also obligatory to look up to them and attempt to emulate them, and the pious generations (the salaf), in matters of the religion.

However, we need to differentiate between their actual religiosity (iman), and what some people of later generations who claim to follow the salaf made as the benchmark of their religiosity. All sciences of Islam, including aqidah (theology), developed and organically grew over the first few centuries of Islam. These developments are important for us to understand and learn our religion, but it is a serious mistake to make the memorization of those later developments the actual benchmark of religiosity. Sadly, this is what some of those who claim to follow the salaf in our times have done.

As a simple example, no one would say that if you asked a Companion, 'How many categories of tawheed are there,' that he would reply 'These are the three categories of tawheed…'; or that he would explain the seven pillars of the kalimah if asked; or elaborate on the four points of belief in Qadr. All of these detailed points were developed later for the sake of teaching these concepts to the people. While the Companions would not have known of these lists, they had actualized iman and tawheed and belief in qadr infinitely better than ANY of us could possibly do, WITHOUT knowing the type of academic categorizations and details that many of us know.

So the question arises: who is the one who is truly following the salaf? Is it the one who has memorized categories that perhaps even the salaf themselves did not know, while such a person displays the height of arrogance towards fellow Muslims, and demonstrates a complete lack of spirituality? Or is the one who has genuine love of Allah in his heart, and a burning desire to follow the Prophet (salla Allah alayhi wa sallam), even if he is ignorant of the academic minutiae of theological lists that are taught in all advanced Islamic seminaries?

The purpose of aqidah books and these humanly written and derived creeds was to draw people closer to Allah; sadly, many of those who study and memorize them in our times have used them as a tool to divide the Ummah, and cause disharmony and discord. More important than these creeds, when it comes to following the salaf, is to follow them in their worship of Allah, in their humility, in their asceticism, in their long prayers at night, in their generosity to the poor, and in their manners.

It is so easy to memorize a list and claim that you are following the salaf. Alas! Where are the followers of the salaf in matters that really count?

People still get confused over Judaism and Zionism. Judaism is a 3,000 year old God-given Faith and Zionism is a man-made, racist, political ideology created in the late 19th century. Not all Jews are Zionists and not all Zionists are Jews. It is wrong, very wrong to try and conflate anti-semitism with anti-Zionism as this excellent diagram from Jews for Justice For Palestinians shows. More info here: http://jfjfp.com/
