The Basics of Tasawwuf
by Sh. Muhammad Al-Yaqoubi
1- Definition:
Purification of the heart.
True devotion to Allah in the ways He likes by the means He likes.
Acting upon knowledge;
Acquiring the good characters and getting rid of the bad.
2- Subject:
Allah, as how He can be known; or hearts souls, as how to purify them.
3- Fruit:
The purification of the heart and knowing the Master of the worlds and attaining the Station of ihsan.
4- Merit:
Tasawwuf is of high merit. Its nobility stems from its subject. Ihsan is one of the three levels of this deen and the highest.
5- Relation to other disciplines:
It is the base of the Sharia; without it acts of worship become imperfect. It is the core of Quran and Sunnah and the tissue of Muslims spiritual life.
6. Name:
The word “tasawwuf” is derrived from souf (wool). Tasawwuf has been known by this name since the second century of hijra, i.e. the time of the salaf. It has been frequently called ilm as-Sulouk (traveling), ilm al-Ihsan, ilm at-Tarbiyah (cultivation) or ilm at-Tazkiyah (purification).
7. The pioneer:
The pioneer of this branch of knowledge is of course the Prophet, PBUH. Many hadiths highlight the spiritual dimention of Muslims life. The earliest scholar who elaborated on it is al-Hasan al-Basriy.
8. Sources:
Tasawwuf is derived from Quran and Sunnah. The sayings of the great scholars represent a rich treasure for the seekers and the masters.
9. Ruling:
Acquiring tasawwuf is fard i.e. obligatory; since all human beings are susceptable to sins save for Prophets. Imam Abul Hasan ash-Shadiliy says, ”Who does not truly acquire this discipline will die persisting on major sins without being aware”.
10. What it tackles:
Tasawwuf tackles some of the cardinal elements of the deen such as sincerity; truthfulness; religious cautioness (wara’); conscious awareness (khushoo’) reliance; asceticism; love; and similarly their opposites, which are the diseases of the hearts such as insincerity; hypocrisy; arrogance; greed etc.. It also tackles subtle subjects such as the passing of thoughts; the states of the heart; inspirations. One of its most important subjects is dhikr, the remembrance of Allah and its virtues; another is the sheikh and his qualifications, the disciple, murid, and his adab.
Basic works in tasawwuf:
The Beauty of the Righteous by al-Hafiz Abu Nuaym al-Asfahani
The Revival of the Sciences of the Deen- (Ihya) al-Imam al- Ghazali
Al-Risalah of Imam Abul Qasim al-Qushayriy
The Aphorisms, al-Hikam, of Imam Ibn Atta’illah
Revelation of the Unseen by Imam Abdul Qadir al-Jaylaniy
Awarif Al-Ma’arif, by Al-Suhrawardi
Qa’id Al-Tasawwuf, by Imam Ahmad Zarooq

Repent (Swedish translation

Shaykh Muhammad al-Yaqoubi

Repent – a new poem
By shaykh Muhammad Al-Yaqoubi

Repent, repent, repent and cry
Open your hands; pray and try
Beseech Allah; and say here am I
Have mercy on me before I die

Start your life anew today
And throw the wrong of the past away
Prepare good works for the Final Day
And when God commands you, hear and obey

Thank the Lord by day and night
Walk straight; and keep right
Guided by the Divine Light
To find the Garden at your sight

Embrace Islam and worship the Lord
Allah, the only One adored
Love Him most and step on-board
With His servants for the reward

Believe in Muhammad, the perfect man
The Seal of prophets; from Adnan
Devote for him your life span
In the hope of joining his caravan

Pray to Allah and recite the Quran
Invoke His Names whenever you can
To taste the sweetnes of iman
And reach the station of Ihsan

The Collapse of Syrian Regime at its own hands
By Shaykh Muhammad Al-Yaqoubi

The decisions taken by the Arab league yesterday are alarms to the end of the Syrian regime; and a warning that Arabs’ move will be stronger than what all expected. These decisions are proofs that the Syrian regime is about to collapse. They actually have drawn the beginning of its end. Moreover, the refusal of the Arab initiative not taking seriously the points proposed and presented by the Arab league is a political suicide and a proof that the Syrian regime does not know where it is heading for.
The crisis today is totally different from where it was five months ago, when the circle of the conflict between the regime and the people had room for several solutions. What brought the crisis to this level of hopelessness of the regime’s survival and the confidence in people’s victory are the following three reasons:
1- the persistence of the Syrian people in their protests against the ongoing oppression
2- the regime confronting demonstrations by killing, arrest, torture, attacks against mosques, etc.
3- the failure of the regime in taking one courageous decision that could solve the crisis.
Therefore, we believe that the collapse of the regime imminent; and will take place, by the Power of Allah, sooner than we anticipate and sooner than the regime and its supporters expect. It is an inevitable conclusion that every reader of the political decisions and security measures and taken by the regime. It has reached a point where it cannot be saved; with the last arrow now getting out of its quiver to hit its heart.
This sums up a long history of the regime after years of empty promises and months of pointless offers for solutions, which made the regime weaker. Politically, the regime appears today swaying at no direction. To prove it just look at how he turned all Arabs into enemies and how it found an excuse in laying the blame on others and delivering accusations to Arabs in every direction, which is the behaviour of the helpless. If ordinary people would accept laying the blame on Turkey, Qatar or Saudi Arabia, the regime will find it difficult to convince them how it is going to lay the blame of all Arabs after they gathered and decided to freeze the membership of Syria. “All Arabs” includes countries that have always supported the regime such as Algeria, Sudan, Oman and Mauritania. It is the regime, through its policies, which lead these countries to loose their hopes in any promises it may make and their belief in any story regime narrates. No wonder, they moved to vote against the regime and to freeze its membership in the Arab League and all its affiliated organisations; and moved to start a serious dialogue on the future of Syrian with the Syrian National Council. How is the Syrian regime going to market these positions? Is it going to turn against all Arabs? This is what can be deduced from some statements which the regime issued, saying goodbye to ‘Arab mutual co-operation”.
The next question which is going to be soon posed is, “what answer the regime is going to provide when China and Russia dump it” and “what impact would this have on it”, which seems to be not far-fetched after Arabs agreed on these steps.
We congratulate our people that Arabs have espoused their cause. The regime has given our people a priceless gift; through its refusal of the initiative of the Arab League and its insistence on the story of armed gangs، which Arabs did not agree on, at least in public.
As for us, whether we admit the use of arms or not, it is not going to have any impact on the revolution today; because the chronological order of events proves that the claims of the presence of armed gangs were made only after protests began and upon the brutal suppression of the protesters and after what people witnessed in Dera and Douma; with the regime not prosecuting the people responsible for the murder of civilians despite its promises. This is probably what pushed some people to take justice by their hands and stop oppression and retaliate by using arms, which we believe, if reports are true, is generally wrong. However, it is clear that Arab media does not care about this side; as though it is trying to expiate for its silence, support and justification of the regimes’ atrocities over decades of oppression and injustice.

An Arabic Poem – selected and translated by sh. Al-Yaqoubi
I selected the following lines of poetry for the pertaining allusion to our recent state in our advocation of the truth and in our support of the oppressed and how after being far away from our homeland, this revealed the true nature of many people around us
The lines are cast by Ibn Qays Al-Ruqayaat, and narrated by Asma’i
Never chose a friend before you check his character
what he is going to hold back and what he is able to give you
And what he is capable of doing and what he fails to do for you
And to check how, when you are under calamities, he defends you
Then, will you know for sure how high or low his level of love for you is

Invocations to Allah on how to supplicate Him
Shaykh Muhammad Al-Yaqoubi
O my Lord! I seek refuge with You from asking You what is Yours lest I misbehave.
O my Lord! I seek refuge with You from asking for what You did not decree to happen; lest I transgress my boundaries.
O my Lord! I seek refuge with You from supplicating You while I am in a state that is unpleasant to You lest I be rejected.
O my Lord! I seek refuge with You from calling upon You in a time when You do not allow it, lest I be prevented.
O my Lord! I seek refuge with You from asking You for what You did not predestin for me.
O my Lord! I seek refuge with You from asking You for what You predestined for others.
O my Lord! I seek refuge with You from asking You for what has already been decreed to happen from pre-eternity and has been determined regardless of my actions.
If I do, it is only in obedience to You, and for supplicating and beseeching You; not to object or suggest, and not to hasten the execution of Your decree or make it happen.
O my Lord! I supplicate You only to show my state of powerlessness and to remind myself of its inherent flaws; as You my Lord love the servant who supplicates in a state of humility and need, but do not love the servant showing sufficiency and will.
O my Lord! I ask You while I am aware that You predestined my supplication, just like You predestined Your grants.
O my Lord! I ask You while I am aware that You made it appear that my supplication is the cause of Your grants, only to allow me to witness the course of Your action in what is being done; and to allow me to see with my heart the transcendence of Your Attributes in motion and stillness.
O my Lord! I ask You while I am aware that You predestined my supplication inasmuch as I am aware that You predestined not to grant it in order for me to come back to You with full submission; and to acknowledge that You are the Omniscient and the Wise; and to witness the oneness of Your Authority and Dominance over the world of things and the world of spirits; and to allow my heart to witness all Your Attributes.
O my Lord! I ask You and call upon You to obtain the honor of being included amongst the ones You call to You; and to attain the quality of servitude when You call me “O my Servant” when I am before You; and to get the pleasure of hearing Your address to me when You say, “I am answering your call.” So, my Lord, make all my supplications to You a door for me to get to You, and a key for bringing me close to You, and a ladder for me to climb the steps of servitude to You.
O my Lord! I ask You for guidance in all my affairs, as You have recommended; and ask You of Your boundless Bounties as You commanded while I am aware that the Pens have been put aside, and the books have been closed. My aim is to bring my intellect out of reflecting upon what it wants to reflecting upon what You want; and in hope of changing the course of my actions from what You do not like to what You like; so that time is saved and I stand in full submission before You. Since bringing about what You do not want belongs to the realm of impossibility, thinking about it brings exhaustion and busying with it is a cause of distress. Out of Your wisdom and justice, You hid the secrets of the inaccessible knowledge from most people; and out of Your Mercy and out of Your Bounty, You revealed signs of the inaccessible knowledge to an elite group of Your servants; yet You revealed the secrets of Divinity in what You hid, and concealed the Lights of Lordship in what You revealed.
O my Lord! make me, when, upon supplication, I receive the grants, rejoice that Allah guided me to ask for what was decreed; and do not make me when seeing the grants rejoice that Allah answered my call and gave me what I asked for. Make us rejoice for being guided to ask of You what You have permitted to happen from pre-eternity; and do not make our rejoicing limited to the favours You just granted us. The guidance You grant to Your servant, to direct him to ask for what You like is a bounty that You bestow only upon those You select, while others become attached only to the gifts given to them upon their supplications, which makes the gifts a veil detaching them from You and pulling them towards the created beings.
Our Lord! Pour on us the various aspects of Your bounties and mercy; and make us a target of the manifestations of Your Wisdom; and include us in the people You love, regardless of what You decree upon us; and of the people who are attached to You, whatever You bring to us. As he who knows You does not need others; and he who seeks You will travel through all orbits.
