Shaykh Nurettin Jan of Istanbul passed away
From Shaykh Muhammad Al-Yaqoubi:
I, with a lot of sorrow and grief, announce that the great erudite scholar and the dear brother and friend, shaykh Nurettin Jan of Istanbul passed away peacefully in Turkey on Wednesday evening, Oct. 26th, 2011 in his 60, after having been in coma for two weeks due a stroke he had as a result of irregular blood pressure.
Shaykh Nurettin was a dear brother and a close friend and I was deeply saddened by the news of his death; as it is a big loss for me on a personal, level and for the Muslim World; as he was not only a local scholar but well known and highly repsected in many countries; hundreds of scholars, professors and imams studied under him.
He devoted his life to the service of this deen and the sacred knowledge and its students. He suffered from several ailments due to his sacrifices when he was a child studying the shari’a sciences.
He told me many stories of the difficulties and the pain he had to go through during his early years of study in the towns South East of Turkey where his family of Kurdish descent lived. They had to study in secret to avoid being cought by the secular regime which banned private institutes. He would walk for miles in the snow with freezing temprature from a village to another because of not having enough money to take any transportation. He and his classmates would share few dry olives every morning in the school, which was a room in a cellar with no ventolation often sealed during police surveiance. He was teaching everyday from six in the morning till noon in his private school and library till before he died.
We had a lot of memories together and he was very close to my heart. His love and respect for me as a member of the Family of the Prophet PBUH was beyond description. He asked me several times for an ijaza and insisted; and I gave it to him just to please him; as he himself was a great scholar but with qualities which are rare in our time, one of them was modesty.
Last time I spoke to him was two weeks before his stroke; I phoned him from Sweden and his voice was frail. As soon as I heard the news of his stroke, I travelled to South of Turkey to see him; it was not easy to see him lying in a hospital with life supporting machines. It was clear that Allah Almighty loved him and wanted him out of this wolrd. He had the stroke in the place he loved most and in the company of his own teacher, the great ‘Allamah sh. Burhaniddin, as he was his guest and they were sitting privately. He was excited and thrilled and forgot about his health. Although is doctor advised him not to travel by plane, he went to see his teacher and to attend with him the inauguration of a new madrasah. He never stopped sacrificing for this religion till he paid his life as a price, but we know that the reward Allah promised for such scholars are beyond description.
I pray that Allah Almighty grant him the highest ranks the Garden and that he be resurrected with the Prophet PBUH and his family. We stand by and sustain his family members, especially his three sons, Muhmmad Asil, Muhammad Wasif, and Muhammad ‘Akif, in their grief. And I send my sincerest condolences to his teacher the great ‘Allamah Burhanuddin of Tello and to his students and friends.
We know that words seem futile now in the midst of this loss but we alos know that du’a is a powerful means of requesting mercy for him and solice his family and for us all.
Therefor, I request brothers and sisters to make khatem for him and recite Yasin as many times as possible and beseech Allah to grant him the rewards. May Allah reward you all.

The Virtues of The First Ten Days of Dhul Hijjah
By Shaykh Muhammad Al-Yaqoubi
Dear readers, tomorrow, Friday, is the first day of Dhul Hijja, which is the last month of the lunar hijri year in the Islamic calendar; it is also the moth of pilgrimage. Moreover, the first ten days of it are the best days in this world according to the words of the Prophet PBUH in a sound piece of Tradition in Sahih Ibn Hibban. Also, Allah Almighty made a special mention of these ten days and honoured them by making an oath by them in the beginning of Surat Al-Fajr, {والفجر وليال عشر} “By the Dawn, and by the Ten Nights”; according to the commentators, these are the first ten days of this month. Allah ordered us to make dhikr of Him in these days when He Almighty referred to them in Surat Al-Hajj {ويذكروا اسم الله في أيام معلومات} “To make mention of Allah in these known days”. Our Beloved Prophet PBUH made good works in these ten days better than working in any other days as in hadith narrated in the Sahih of imam Bukhari.
Imam Ibn Hajar al-Asqalani explains why these days are the best days of the year by pointing out to the fact that they include all major acts of worship in Islam, namely prayer, fasting, charity and pilgrimage. which do not come together except in other months.
So, it is recommended to do a lot of extra acts of worship in these days such as fasting the first nine days; doing a lot of extra dhikr, especially takbir and tahlil; reciting the Holy Qur’an and much more.
Seize this opportunity; as we are never sure whether we live till next year to compensate. Show the best of yourself in the field of prayer, dhikr, Qur’an and visit the masjids more often to deserve the celebration of eid even if you do not go for hajj. We will speak later insha Allah on the Day of ‘Arafah
With my salaam and du’a to all of you who have read this to the end.

Repent – a new poem
By shaykh Muhammad Al-Yaqoubi

Repent, repent, repent and cry
Open your hands; pray and try
Beseech Allah; and say here am I
Have mercy on me before I die

Start your life anew today
And throw the wrong of the past away
Prepare good works for the Final Day
And when God commands you, hear and obey

Thank the Lord by day and night
Walk straight; and keep right
Guided by the Divine Light
To find the Garden at your sight

Embrace Islam and worship the Lord
Allah, the only One adored
Love Him most and step on-board
With His servants for the reward

Believe in Muhammad, the perfect man
The Seal of prophets; from Adnan
Devote for him your life span
In the hope of joining his caravan

Pray to Allah and recite the Quran
Invoke His Names whenever you can
To taste the sweetnes of iman
And reach the station of Ihsan

To the Libyan people: Congratulations and Advice
by Sh. Muhammad Al-Yaqoubi
The end of a tyrant and the beginning of a new era
Praise be to Allah. Prayers and Salutations be upon our master, the Messenger of Allah PBUH, his family, and his companions.
Dear brothers and sisters in Libya,
An era of oppression, subjugation, and anarchy that lasted for over forty years has just ended, an era during which Libya was ruled by a rogue and eccentric man who swung between belief and disbelief, faith and deviation; exerting oppression, committing murder, and repressing people.
To you the Libyan people, we extend our congratulations, not for the death of a person, as death is not an occasion for jubilation or gloating, but for the end of a dark chapter in the history of this great nation. Yes indeed, the honorable and honest soldiers are most worthy of our congratulations.
The era of the Great Socialist People’s Libyan Arab Jamahiriya has ended with the death of its founder Muammar al-Gaddafi. His reign was based not on the book of Allah Almighty, but on the Green Book, and it was established not on the foundations of the sunnah of the Messenger of Allah PBUH, but on the principles of socialism.
As a new era is dawning in Libya, the question today is about the future of Libya away from the covetousness of the West and the control of IMF. Can the Libyan people cast away the consequences of NATO’s support and Western military intervention and build a sovereign state that is not subservient to the American and French foreign policies in the region? This is what we hope.
Another challenging question is whether the rebels can exercise restraint and stay calm and return to their homes to allow the enforcing of the law in the land instead of anarchy. We have been hearing terrible stories about the demolition of shrines of saints and the digging of their graves by fanatic and extremist groups who are also part of the rebel force. We strongly condemn these deplorable actions and urge the members of The National Transitional Council of Libya (NTC) to take the necessary steps to protect the mosques, shrines, and graveyards from being desecrated. We also urge the NTC to prosecute the perpetrators of such offenses.
In closing, we again extend our congratulations to the Libyan people, but express our concern at the news we’ve been hearing and what the coming days and weeks might bring if this problem is not addressed promptly. This revolution should not allow fanatics to destroy this country’s religious heritage, which is based on the Malikite school of Islamic law, the Ash’arite doctrine in theology, and the Sufi tradition, a heritage that follows in the footsteps of righteous predecessors of our ummah.

Shaykh Muhammad Al-Yaqoubi’s response to the question about his involvement in politics: “After praising Allah Almighty and sending fragrant prayers upon the Seal of prophets our Master Muhammad, PBUH, I would like to express my deep thanks for the brothers and the sisters, friends, teachers and students, from all walks of life, who offered their insightful opinions and advice on the question which was posed. I received 75 comments ranging from few words to one page all full of wisdom, love and concerns for Muslims in Syria and for my safety.
The question about forming a movement or a political party is out of question; and the same applies on holding any post in future governments.
Politics is a dirty game and an honest man would not last at best for more than few weeks. My role as a scholar and a spiritual leader should be more important and is of greater impact even in politics.
However, forming a political party or holding a political position should be don by our students in Syria and around the world. And when they feel the ground is ready for them to implement our vision and views and revive the role of the shari’a and the ulema.
Once, when I was a little boy, my father asked me: “what do you want to become in the future?” I naively answered, “a president”. He replied, “I will tell of something better”; “better?” I wondered, but he explained, “better than that is when the president is your student”. This is the insight of he Ulema. He explained, our job is to prepare politicians, doctors, engineers, teachers, farmers and all kinds of people to live Islam and implemented in their life.
Therefore, amongst few other reasons, I decided not to accept any position, whether in the Syrian National Council or in the Revolution Council, to both of which I have been nominated; nor in the future; the same stance which I have always had.
I will continue what I am doing now, teaching and guiding people to Allah, writing and giving fatwas. nevertheless, whenever there is a need to issue a statement, answer a question or clarify a point related to the political aspect of our shari’a and the struggle of the Syrian people, I will come out with statements either written or in interviews as best suitable.
We will continue our struggle for the establishment of Islam and Muslim identity in future Syria via our speeches and lectures and writings without threatening the society nor through any violent methods. Rather through informing people and bringing awareness and establishing proofs.
One of the brothers from the USA suggested establishing an centre for research on politics in Islam, which I believe is direly needed. There is a wealth of texts that has not been discovered or studied, an example of which was given in our fatwa on the legitimacy to remove oppressive rulers. This is something to discuss in future Syrian insha Allah.
I reiterate my thanks to all the people who wrote their words of courtesy and wisdom, who put their trust in my choice and for those who wanted me to get involved in politics. May Allah reward you all and increase you in knowledge of Him and strengthen you in practice of His commands.

Shaykh Al-Yaqoubi denounces Hassoun’s threats
In a strong statement, the prominent Syrian scholar Shaykh Muhammad Al-Yaqoubi denounced the threats made by the Mufti of Syria Ahmad Hassoun to send suicide bombers to Europe and the USA if Syria is attacked.
In his statement, shaykh Al-Yaqoubi said: “Hassoun does not represent the Syrian Clerics nor does he have a mandate from the Syrian people.” He added, “the Mufti has no right to threaten anyone on behalf of the Syrian people. These outrageous threats are an indication of his disrespect of the millions of Muslims living in Europe and the USA. We strongly denounce these empty threats which would only distort the image of Islam and Muslims around the world. They would only lead to more paranoia of Islam and discrimination against Muslims. It is strange that he issues such threats to support the regime, while he was silent against Israel, even when Syria was attacked by Israeli warplanes. Instead, the Mufti sent a curse against Palestinian martyrs and condemned them, when he spoke at the European Parliament.”
Shaykh Al-Yaqoubi also stressed that the regime lost its legitimacy when it started shooting its own people and after it sent tanks to bomb mosques. As such, all members of this regime including the Mufti have no authority to speak on behalf of the Syrian people.
Shaykh Al-Yaqoubi stated that while the people of Syria did not request military intervention by Europe and the USA, and are against it, the Syrian people “welcome all the support that these countries are offering to our people in their struggle for freedom. The Syrian people are grateful to all the peoples, governments, and politicians who have stood by their side.”
It should be noted that shaykh Muhammad Al-Yaqoubi is one of the main driving forces behind the demonstrations with his fatwas and words of encouragement to the Syrian people, and with his denunciation of the Syrian regime since the beginning of the uprising. For that he was sacked of his job as a lecturer at the Grand Omayyad Mosque and as the Chief Imam at the Al-Hassan mosque in Abu Remmaneh, the most affluent quarter of Damascus. He was banned from public speaking and had to leave the country.

Question for all brothers and sisters:
Do you think our Beloved Shaykh Muhammad Al-Yaqoubi should be involved more in the Syrian politics? Should he form a political party or establish an Islamic movement? Should he play any role in future Syria or you think he continues what he is doing now teaching the sacred Knowledge and guiding people to Allah without getting involved in politics?
Please express your views here and what you would want the shaykh to doand invite others to have their say. This is not a debate between the visitors of this page, rather a poll and a survey to see prob the public opinion and take it into consideration. We will give your comments to the shaykh to read insha Allah.

Q & A on the Mahdi and the Sufyani
Muhammad Idrisi asks: Is there any ease after this hardship or problems will increase till the advent of imam Mahdi, enlighten us may Allah reward you with every good. Please make du’a for us; and how to be of the soldiers of the Mahdi, if we live till his time. And what is the way to attain true love for the Family of the Prophet not as a claim?
Answer of Shaykh Al-Yaqoubi, may Allah preserve him:
Time if full of unrest and hardships; the Sufyani has not yet appeared and Allah is the one who knows; imam Mahdi will emerge only after him; yet between the two, there are wide wildsin which the Jewish people would have power over the land of Sham, which is part of the job of the coming Sufyani. If I had the choice, I would have withdrawn from all public activities; but the dress of shari’a puts on us the obligation to support the oppressed and clarify the rulings, even if we know through the reality that what comes after is worse. Having knowledge of the Divine decree to be should not prevent us from following the command of the shari’a; so long as Allah put us in the position of fatwa, admonishment and guidance. Remember these words, as we rarely express it in this clear way.

Words of wisdom: Be with Allah – By Shaykh Muhammad al-Yaqoubi
To all people involved in the Syrian and Arab revolutions; to political leaders struggling for their peoples and to all Muslims under oppression:
This is the right time to come back to Allah, the time to repent and return to Him and the time to beseech Him; as this is the key to our relief and the means for us to be given the authority of our ancestors and be true heirs to them. “Who else will answer the call of the distress, lift hardships and appoint you as inheritors of the earth?”
Everyone should know that adversities are results of our sins and that repentance is the way to remove them. We need to also remember that all things are under the power of Allah. We have to take action as He commanded us yet with reliance on Him and after returning to Him and believing that He is the only one who could benefit or harm us, not this man or that. This was clearly stated by the Greatest Prophet, our master PBUH when he said, “You should Know that if all people tried to extend to you a favour, they would not be able to extend but what Allah predestined for you; and similarly, if all people tried to cause you any harm, they would not be able unless Allah predetermined it against you.
So be with Allah through reliance, with His Decree through contentment with it; with His command by executing it and with His creation by having mercy on them. Do not let means and actions stop your belief that Allah is the Creator of the causes and the effects; nor allow people’s harm to you make you obsessed with them.
Allah suffices for you, if you stand at His door as a servant, as He clearly promised, “Is Allah not enough for His Servant?” Read the rest of the verse to find the answer to your current dilemma “and they intimidate you with others who are far less powerful than Him.” So, do not fear other than Allah as long as you are a true servant of Allah: If you are with Allah, Allah will be with you; if you run to Allah, you will be safe from everything else; if you seek support with His Signs you will superior
In as much as calamities reveal man’s true mettle and virtue; they demonstrate the essence of his belief, contentment, and reliance. This is one of the most important purposes of adversities as Allah Almighty said, “We will try you to reveal who amongst you truly struggles and is patient; and to disclose your states – to others.” Then Allah says, “the unbelievers who prevent people from the path to Allah, disobey the Messenger, after guidance was made clear to them, will not cause any harm to Allah; Allah will foil all their misdeeds.”

Shaykh Muhammad Al-Yaqoubi sends his sincerest condolences to the Prime Minister of Turkey Mr. Recep Tayyip Erdoğan at the loss of his mother and to his family. May Allah the Most Most Merciful send on her His infinite mercy and make her grave a piece of the Garden. May Allah grant her family enough patience. Shaykh Al-Yaqoubi thanks Mr. Erdoğan for his support to Syrian people in their struggle.

The opposition leader Mesha’al al-Tammo is assassinated:
Shaykh Muhammad Al-Yaqoubi denounces the assassination of Mesha’al al-Tammo, an active and a prominent leader of the Syrian opposition, by the Syrian regime. Shaykh Al-Yaqoubi offers his sincerest condolences to his family and to the Syrian people asking Allah to have mercy on him, and grant patience to his family and victory to the Syrian people.

Our Political Vision:
By Shaykh Muhammad Al-Yaqoubi:
We should remember that the worst tyrants of the Arab World in our modern history did not rule in the name of Islam but in the name of secularism and democracy. There first victims were not the seculars but Muslims who were suppressed and Islamic movements which were banned. Why then “Islamists” are feared and prevented from reaching power. It was not “Islamists” who supported these oppressive regimes; rather the seculars, while the “democtaric world is helping these regimes stop the Islamic tide and applauding to them: France supported Ben Ali’ in Tunisia; USA supported Mubarak in Egypt; and the EU supported the Assad’s regime. It high time we proved that Islam is more tolerant towards its opponents than the fake democracies of the West which protect the secular and eliminate the religious under the claims of fighting extremism. All we are doing is replacing one alleged extremism by another already proven extremist. It is time for Islam to present its vision and solutions to the political, social and economic and crises in the Islamic World. For anyone who is trying to predict the future of the Middle East, I say, wait to see the Islamic choice being embraced by our people as the only guarantee to a better future. To all of that we see the start coming from Syria.
