My thoughts and prayers go out to the families of the over 700 people who have died in Karachi, Pakistan today and yesterday as a result of heatstroke (and the numbers are rising by the hour).

Dear grieving families: take some comfort in the fact that they died during this blessed and holy month. May Allah forgive their sins and elevate their ranks!!

For all of you in that area (and in other hot areas of the world): take extra precautions during this month. Stay in shade as much as possible, fan yourself, take multiple quick baths during the day if possible, wear loose clothing that allows the air to cool your body, drink water constantly throughout the night if you are fasting in the day, and see if its possible to cut back manual labor in the sun or to at least change its timings.

Muslims! Know that following Allah’s commandments is not meant to cause your death, and that the Shariah DEMANDS that you BREAK your fast if you feel the symptoms of a heatstroke or even are at high risk for one (please consult with your doctor to learn the symptoms and to assess your own risks, which depend on your age, lifestyle and other factors).

I repeat, BREAK YOUR FAST IF THERE IS A LEGITIMATE FEAR OF A HEATSTROKE, and then make it up, without penalty or sin, when you are able to. This is the mercy of Allah, as per the explicit text of the Quran.

May Allah make it easy for you, and for all of us!
