People ask me what changed most when I started as Imam of a congregation in December of 2005. I tell them that the most horrifying realization I came too was the amount of women being beaten by their husbands. They weren’t just the wives of people that barely came to the mosque. These were the wives of some men in the front row. People who were active in the masjid, some even as administrators. Sadly however, so many of these women were silenced either by the fear of being beaten further, the fear of losing their families, or the fear of being ostracized by their community. This is a serious epidemic in our society at large that needs to be tackled head on. #DomesticViolenceAwarenessMonth
