Dr. Ali al-Tantawi was a Syrian scholar who passed away at the turn of the last century. He left behind many works and is well know for his wisdom and profound advice. He lived a very long and erudite life.

I have quoted him on this page before.

Recently I came across another quote of his that moved me. He wrote (translated with liberty by me):

“Never has any era come across my life – and how many are the eras that I have seen! – except that we cried out of anguish over its harms, and then, after it moved on, cried out of sadness, missing it.”

This is so true! We complain about the ‘now’, no matter how much good is in it, and when it disappears and becomes the past, we reminisce about ‘how good the ole’ days were.’

We seem to have an inherent tendency to demonize the current, and romanticize the past.
