Yesterday, President Barack Obama gave his State of the Union Address. He mentioned Muslims in the context of certain other facts, and said that we need to reject offensive stereotypes about them.

Great, right?

One major problem. Looks like others aren’t too keen on that phrase.

Listen carefully for two minutes from this clip:

If you didn’t get that, let me type that out:

As Americans, we respect human dignity, even when we’re threatened, which is why I’ve prohibited torture, [applause] and worked to make sure our use of new technology like drones is properly constrained [applause]. It’s why we speak out against the deplorable anti-Semitism that has resurfaced in certain parts of the world [applause]. It’s why we continue to reject offensive stereotypes of Muslims — the vast majority of whom share our commitment to peace [MAJOR AWKWARD SILENCE]. That’s why we defend free speech, and advocate for political prisoners, and condemn the persecution of women, or religious minorities, or people who are lesbian, gay, bisexual, or transgender [applause]. We do these things not only because they’re right, but because ultimately they will make us safer [applause].

– end quote.

It was clearly another ‘clapping’ moment – yet there was deafening silence. From both Republicans and Democrats.

Muslims really need to understand the rising tide of animosity and Islamophobia being generated around us. It does not bode well for the future.
