You and I can wake up angry at the wrongs done to us, sad over our mistakes, stuck in place not seeing a way out. We can overwhelm our minds with how ruthless, cruel and merciless people in the world can be with their hands and their tongues. These feelings can make us feel like we’re drowning, suffocating even. But we can also wake up saying
الحمد لله الذي أحيانا بعد ما أماتنا وإليه النشور
“All praise and gratitude belongs to Allah who gave us life after He’d given us death and to Him alone is the resurrection. “

As I contemplate these words in the moments of my awakening I realize that these words are in fact an awakening themselves. My sleep last night was death. Me waking up this morning is a resurrection; a new life. Allah has given us a new chance, a new life. He didn’t just wake up our bodies, but our hearts and my souls. If we were as lost a cause to Him as we are to those who hold ill in their hearts against us, He wouldn’t give us a new life. As we enter this new day, this new life, we have to do so with absolute clarity in the depths of our souls that no wrong we’ve done is gone unrecorded and no wrong done to us is erased from His record. We will be taken back to Him and all matters will be settled.

Friends and loved ones can minimize the wrongs we’ve done possibly giving us false hope that they’re no big deal. Others with spite can magnify our wrongs in hopes of burying us under their false and exaggerated weight. But He…He will weigh all deeds, all words and all intentions not as they were perceived by myself or by others. He will weigh them as they are. He will be Merciful yet He will be Just. He will not judge us by the claims made against us but the truth behind those claims. May be reflecting on that will help us keep a clearer picture of where we truly stand today, not polluted by the false comforts offered us by some on the one hand and the hateful lies and judgments of some on the other.

As we go about this day we hope to do so knowing this could be our last. We do what we can to make amends with who we can. We ignore those who will judge us no matter what we do and appreciate those who’ve been a sincere mirror, pointing out our errors with loving concern while acknowledging our innate goodness. We will treat this day as if this was all we had. After all, when we go back to Him that’s exactly what we’ll be saying to each other…

إن لبثتم إلا يوما
You stayed for nothing but just a day…
