In regards to the devastating news of the elder Imam in Chicago being charged with sexual misbehavior, I reiterate what I wrote a couple of months ago when I first heard about it:

Sexual predators should not be sheltered in our communities for the sake of avoiding public scandals. If a person is proven to have been inappropriate with any member of the community, they need to be turned out and the victims should be supported and not shamed. The honor of a person who is confirmed to have done such a thing is not nearly as sacred as the honor of the one who was violated in innocence. Silence in situations like this permanently damages the victim and the community as a whole while providing cover for a predator to victimize others.

I support and stand with those who are making efforts to help the victims and fight this disease in our communities.

As religious leadership, we need to do a better job.
